255lb At 5'10": How I Learned To Coach This Properly
Nicholas Mercanti · Hamilton, ON · September 1, 2026
I did not come to this from the front of the class. I started training because I was very skinny and needed to gain weight. That was the entire goal. Get bigger. I started weight training and it felt really good, in the way it does when you are young and everything is new and progress is cheap.
Then I tore my bicep, because my training was wrong. Not unlucky. Wrong. I was chasing load with technique I did not understand, and my body eventually sent the invoice. The injury took the training away, and without it the weight went the other direction. I ended up 255lb at 5'10".
What being the heavy guy taught me
I know what people mean when they say they want to feel better in their own skin, because I lived in the version of my body I did not want. It is not really about a number on a scale. It is getting dressed for work and choosing clothes to hide in. It is stairs. It is photos. It is the low background noise of not feeling like yourself. Nobody signs up for coaching because they are curious about macros. They sign up because they are tired of that noise.
That is also why I do not shame anybody about where they are starting. I have been at both ends of it. Skinny and frustrated, then heavy and frustrated. There is nothing morally interesting about either. They are just starting points with different work attached.
The part that changed everything
After that, I dedicated my time to learning how nutrition works and proper lifting technique. Both, deliberately, in that order of seriousness. I stopped collecting workouts and started understanding energy balance, protein, progressive overload, joint positions, tempo, why a rep looks the way it looks. The science is not decoration on top of training. It is the reason training works or hurts you.
Eventually I went on and competed in my first bodybuilding show at the Toronto Naturals in 2026. A show is a strange, extreme, useful thing. It forces you to be exact about food and training for months, and it teaches you exactly how much structure a person needs to hold a hard plan together. Almost nobody should diet like a competitor. Everybody benefits from the discipline of measuring the right things.
Why I coach the way I coach
After the show I knew I had what it took to help guide people in the right direction in terms of their fitness journey. Guide is the operative word. My training is mostly bodybuilding style, tied into strength and conditioning, so you get shape and capability rather than one at the expense of the other. My nutrition coaching is built around food you actually want to eat, because I already learned what happens when a plan requires you to be someone else.
And I check in daily, by text, with weekly calls for online clients. I refuse to let my client feel like they are alone in this process. Every mistake I made, I made without anybody watching. Torn bicep, hundred extra pounds, years of guessing. My clients do not have to learn that way, and that is the entire reason Beyondyourgoals exists.
One year in business, in Hamilton, and I would still rather tell you the unglamorous version of my story than a polished one. It is the part that qualifies me.
